Zwar nicht die größte Maschine mit 2m SPW und aktuell 4s nicht das stärkste, aber zum Einstig macht's einfach nur mega Spaß. Eigenkonstruktion, möglichst einfach, robust und leicht.

Eigenbau schlepper

Here is my own design towplane.

It was originally powered by an old King 140RV, but a few months ago the crankshaft broke in the air, so now I´m in the process of installing a new 3W-210Xi TS which I got for a good price.
The engine came from another towplane built from the same kit, so changing the engine is only a matter of unscrewing the engine dome from the "donor model", and installing it on my own towplane. Then only the mounting of the canisters have to be changed.

Specifications:
Span: 262 cm
Length: 216 cm with the King, but about 10 cm shorter with the 3W. The engine dome is custom made, to length for the chosen engine, to make sure that the CG is correct without the need for any ballast.
Weight: 16,5 kg with the King, and about 18,5 to 19 kg with the 3W.
Wing area: 123,3 dm²
Wing loading: 152 g/dm² (Was about 130-140 with the King)

I managed to get the re-engined towplane started this afternoon.
When I bought the engine I got two propellers also, a SEP 32x14x2 and a SEP 30x12x3. Both in the "scale" blade shape.

The rpm seemed rather low though, about 4950 for the two-blade and 5100 for the three-blade, but I don´t know how the SEP compares to a Menz or Fiala for example. I´m not doubting that the propellers will perform well in the air, as the thrust was quite high, only the low rpm surprised me quite a bit. I would have expected 5500 or more on both props.

Test flown this afternoon/evening, and everything works perfectly it seems. Plenty of power with the new engine, and a pleasant sound even with the 32x14 two-blade propeller.
It will rip a little going vertical, but not very much. I have not tried going full speed when flying level, as I´m afraid it will be quite loud then. :-)

The extra power is easily felt and is also verified by telemetry data.
The max climb speed has gone from about 17 m/s (3350 ft/min) to about 22 m/s (4330 ft/min) going straight up. Airspeed during the vertical climb have gone from about 50 km/h to 70-80 km/h.

The landing roll have also been lengthened quite a bit, but I attribute this to the higher weight as well as the more forward CG. The approach to landing on the other hand is now rock steady. Not bad before by any means, but much more stable now. Now it should cope with high wind speeds even better than before.

M19 Flying Squirrel

Na, dann will ich meinen Exoten auch mal kurz vorstellen.

Die M-19 ist der Nachbau eines überaus unbekannten und etwas abenteuerlichen US-Ultralights mit Baumarkt-Latten-Rumpf, Depron-Rippenflächen und Käfermotor. Das Vorbild hat 24 Fuß (7,31 m) Spannweite und ca. 200 kg Leermasse.
Mein Nachbau hat es zu 3,4 m Spannweite und 2 qm Flächeninhalt gebracht. Rumpfspanten und Flächenrippen sind CNC-gefräst. Gewicht: 19 kg trocken. Der 170er-Valach treibt eine Müller-Dreiblatt 30x12“ inzw. mit 5200 U/min vor sich her. Die Musik ist gemäß 25-m-DMFV-Messmethode 75 dB(A) leise und bietet immer noch genügend Bumms, damit wir mit einer ASK13 in 1:3 hinten dran schon nach zwei Platzlängen Sicherheitshöhe haben. Landungen sind bei 45 Grad Klappenstellung Wilga-like, auch wenn der Müller-Prop bekannter weise nicht so berauschend bremst. Der Rest von der Blockhütte gleicht das aber ganz wunderbar aus...
