Inselsegeln

"IOM National Ranking Weekend at Woodspring 10th & 11th March 2007

Report written by Tony Edwards

Two crucial ranking races for the IOM Class were held at Woodspring MSC at
Portishead on 10/11 March. This weekend was the final opportunity for UK
skippers to gain points towards selection for the IOM World Championship to
be held in Marseille in October 2007. The two events at Portishead
attracted an excellent entry of 45 each day which not only included most of
the UK's best IOM skippers but also visitors from Germany, Ireland and
Holland. There was a real buzz of anticipation around the lake on this the
first IOM ranking event of 2007, giving the GBR fleet a chance to compare
the latest ideas and innovations and to see who was sailing which boat after
the winter layoff. The race venue, excellent organisation and hospitality
by the Woodspring Club, and not least the dry and comparatively mild
weekend with good top suite breezes did not disappoint.

Saturday
Saturdays 10/12 knot shifty wind from the SW allowed RO Chris Jackson to set
an excellent course with a beat the length of the lake, with only minor
adjustments during the day. Robert Walsh (Lintel), Trevor Binks (Isis),
Graham Elliot (Gadget+) and Alistair Law (Topico) started brightly with
seeding round wins. Alistair was followed in closely in his seeding heat by
Richard Rowan (Italiko) providing a notable Scottish presence on the early
leader board - Ali and Richard were overheard saying - take a photo now of
the fleet board !
After the first two rounds the racing continued throughout in three heats
giving nineteen boats on the water and exciting racing for competitors and
spectators alike. As the sun started to set and the wind dropped at the end
of the day, local skipper Mike Hounsell (Isis) got the first beat
absolutely spot on to record a good last race win.
7 races were completed during the day allowing one discard. Peter Stollery
(Isotonic) led initially but Chris Harris (Widget) was ultimately dominant
with 3 wins and a total score of just 13.

Sunday
Conditions for the Sunday event were similar to Saturday but were a little
more challenging with a slightly stronger and blustery wind from the SW.
With the beat again being set over the full length of the lake, the wind
conditions required skippers to choose the optimum moment on the first beat
of when to make the port tack for the windward mark - frequently little
puffs came in lifting the port lay line boats into the first mark - but
these lifts were not consistent and often the boats from starboard would
regain the advantage as they approached the mark.
Sunday saw RO Chris Jackson adopt the new 6 boat up 6 down rule provided in
this year's SSIs - the change from using 4 up 4 down on Saturday was
intended to provide the MYA with feedback from the skippers about how the
two compared.
Sunday's seeding rounds were won by Robert Walsh (Lintel), Brad Gibson
(Windstar/Metric Magic), Peter Stollery (Isotonic) and Mike Clifton
(Cockatoo).
Throughout the day, one or two competitors occasionally tried their number
2 rig but the majority remained on number 1 all day. However, by the 7th
and last race of the day, the frequency and weight of the squalls started
to increase and two of the top skippers changed down. Richard Rowan found
the number 2 rig underpowered in the last B heat but just managed to scrape
sixth position and was promoted. Mark Dennis (Italiko) had also changed
down and as the A heat got underway, a series of heavier squalls came
through and provided Mark and Richard with sufficient advantage to finish
2nd and 3rd respectively in the A heat.
The final outcome of the day provided a win for "Grand Master" Graham
Bantock(Topiko) followed closely by "Young Gun" Rob Walsh, with John
Arundell (Triple Crown) just pipping Brad Gibson for 3rd place.

Sunday results:

1. Graham Bantock Topiko 18
2. Robert Walsh Lintel 22
3. John Arundell Triple Crown 28
